Rough-in and inspection
The sequence inside the walls
The order is the same on every house. Each step ends with something a builder or inspector can look at.
- 01
Step 1: Mark the layout
Fixture centerlines and stack positions are marked on the slab and the framing from sheet P-1 and checked against the architect's dimensions.
- 02
Step 2: Set the pipe
Supply, drain and vent are run to the sheets. Where the framing and the drawing disagree, the crew stops and calls the project manager.
- 03
Step 3: Photograph every wall
Each wall is photographed before it closes and the pictures are filed with the sheets, so a valve can be found without opening anything.
- 04
Step 4: Test under pressure
The supply is pressure tested and the drains are checked before inspection. The result and the date go on the sheet.
- 05
Step 5: Inspection
The city inspection is booked with the builder. The walls close only after it passes.
- 06
Step 6: Set the trim
Fixtures go in against the schedule, with finishes protected until the owner has seen them.
- 07
Step 7: Commission
Every outlet is run and checked for flow and temperature. The regulator is read against sheet P-3.
- 08
Step 8: Hand over
The owner receives the shutoff map, the final schedule and the pressure reading. The builder receives the file.

How we keep a finished house finished
Most of the work is done when stone and wood floors are already down or about to be.
Floors are covered before a tool comes out. Fittings are counted in and counted out. Cuttings are swept each day, and trim goes in only when the painter and the stone setter are finished.
Shoe covers inside once flooring is down
Protection on stone, wood and finished tile
A tool tray, not a tool pile
Fixture boxes opened by the person who sets them
